2008 Division Assignments / Draft Spot Selection Order

carrie-underwood-vanity-fair.jpgAfter one of the most successful postseason parties since the late 90′s when porn got ordered, we’ve begun preparations for the 2008 PFFL season.

In the first order of official business, 2008 Division Assignments were drawn randomly. You can view the results on the Waymorefunner PFFL site.

carrie-underwood-cmt-1.jpgA few notes:

  • The last two Super Bowl champs (The Jedi Masters and Winning Beer Money) are in the Central
  • Two 2007 division champs (SIAP and Kramerica) are paired up in the East
  • Post Mortem is in the West for the fifth straight year.
  • Kramerica is in the East for the third straight year
  • Hedfullalicker (West), DDT (East), and WBM (Central) are staying in the same division they were in in ’07
  • Post Mortem is the only ’07 playoff team in the West, while 4 of the 5 Eastern teams and 3 of 4 in the Central qualified for the postseason.

p1_underwood.jpgNext up, was the random drawing for the draft spot selection order. Before we get to those results, let me remind you of the changes that are in place for the 2008 draft. As announced in mid-August:

Some background: Our current draft order process re-randomizes every odd round. The goal of this activity was to increase the ‘fairness’ of the draft order for all teams in our unique 14 team league, via randomization (aka, every team has a shot at the 1st pick in the 3rd round). In addition, we started the “Pick your own first round spot” thing a few years ago as a way to increase the ‘fun factor’ in the offseason leading up to the draft itself. We could probably hold an endless debate about whether the randomization was truly “fair” or whether the pick your first round spot thing has been “fun”. I’m not going there now though, preferring instead to present our new and improved 2008 Draft process.

In 2008, we will draw names from a hat ONE time. This order will determine the order in which teams select their First Round Draft spot. The selection of a first round draft position will also determine your draft spot for the rest of the draft as follows:
The team who selects the #1 spot in round one will have the following picks:
1.01
2.14
3.14
4.14
5.01
6.14
7.01
etc

The team who selects the #14 spot in round one will have the following picks:
1.14
2.01
3.01
4.01
5.14
6.01
7.14
etc

In other words, the draft order will be set up with a traditional “serpentine” approach (each round is the reverse of the previous round), THEN the THIRD round (and third round only) will be flipped, so that rounds 2, 3 and 4 share the same draft order.

This is called “Third Round Reversal” or “Banzai” drafting. There is a bunch of statistical analysis that has gone into proving that this is the most equitable draft order, so our hope is that this order accomplishes the ‘parity’ goal that we had previously strived for with the re-randomization. AND, it should make the selection of your first round draft position a LOT more interesting, since the top spots will drop you near the bottom of the next three rounds.

carrie_underwood_43500.jpgThe Draft Spot Selection order can be found on the same page that you make your spot selection. That page will be updateed soon to update the entire draft order once your selection is made. Of course, none of you will pick a spot until July anyway, but that’s beside the point.

Happy with your spot? Angered about it? Confused about which spot to select? Feel free to comment here or bitch to your mom. Your choice.

Carrie Underwood (a hot topic of discussion at the postseason party since she was on the SNL repeat airing after the playoff games finished and before JW and JH found the gay show) wishes all of you a happy FFL offseason.

2007 Championship Recap – Congratulations Jedi Masters!

pfflxi.pngIn a result that seems only fair given their sheer dominance over all opponents this year and the PFFL record books, The Jedi Masters are the 2007 PFFL Super Bowl champions. Congratulations are definitely in order for Joel and Allen, who put together the strongest, deepest roster in the league.

jennifer_lamiraqui14.jpgSome Notes on the Super Bowl:

  • The Jedis beat Kramerica twice this season (weeks 6 and 17), and now enjoy a 6-3 all-time advantage.
  • Kramerica scored the 7th fewest points (74.77) of any team ever in a Super Bowl. The lowest? TKD’s 50 point day in 1997.
  • The 167.88 combined points makes this the 8th highest scoring (or 4th lowest scoring) Super Bowl in PFFL history.
  • The 18.34 point victory margin means this was the 5th closest Super Bowl game.
  • Limited since it covers only 2004-2007, but still interesting: Carson Palmer’s 28.8 points and Drew Brees’ 25 points are the 2nd and 4th most points scored by a single player in a Super Bowl game.
  • The Jedis are now tied with three other teams in second place on the list of most postseason wins with 8.
  • The streak of teams who lose their first Super Bowl winning when they get a second shot continues to hold true. This is excellent news for DDT, Hedfullalicker, Kramerica, Post Mortem, SaaBB and Turd Ferguson — who are all 0-1 in championship appearances.

jlbn539.jpgToilet Bowl

  • The Hip defeated Hedfullalicker, 72.85 – 58.98, in the Toilet Bowl.
  • This is The Hip’s first Toilet Bowl title, and they are the fourth different team to win this exclusive prize (no prize) in the four years of its existence.

44316_jennifer_lamiraqui-070_122_783lo.jpgFranchise Ratings!

Per the franchise rating system setup, the ratings have been updated now that the season has concluded. The full list can be viewed here.

4-5 star teams

  • The Jedi Masters improved from a 3.5 star rating to a perfect 5-star rating with their record setting season.
  • SIAP’s division title also increased their franchise value back to the 5-star level.
  • Post Mortem holds steady as a 4.5 star club.
  • Double D rebounded from their Dominack Davis debacle of a year ago to jump back to 4.5 star range (from 3.5).
  • Tappa Kegga Day’s wild card appearance was enough for them to add a half-star up to 4.5.
  • DDT held steady at 4 stars.

2-3.5 star teams

  • The Hip’s struggles continue, as this once proud franchise dropped from a 4-star rating to 3.5
  • Winning Beer Money continued to gradually build their franchise rating back up — gaining a half star to 3.5
  • SaaBB improved from 2 to 2.5, and likely would have made a bigger jump had they won their division
  • Hedfullalicker dropped from a 2.5 rating to 2 stars

0 – 1.5 star teams

  • Turd Ferguson’s pitiful year dropped them a full star from 2.5 to 1.5
  • Kramerica was the lowest rated team in the league entering the season, but their division title and Super Bowl appearance has injected some value into their team, although only to the half star level (it should be noted that they are the highest valued of the 0.5 star teams, however)
  • Camel Toe dropped from a 1 to 0.5 stars in their second PFFL season (all teams enter the league as 1 star teams)
  • CSPJ remained steady a half a star, but is now technically the lowest valued team in the league.

107vi.jpgPost-Season Party

Don’t forget that we’re celebrating the season with a playoff-watching party on Jan 5. You should’ve received an eVite link with more info. Division assignments for 2008 and the first round draft spot selection order will be determined during that party. Also, beer will be drunk.

French Supermodel Jennifer Lamiraqui congratulates The Jedi Masters on their championship and wishes you and yours a very happy new year!
