Playoff Week 2 Recap [Rachel Stevens]

Wow… So, yeah, that whole stat change thing really happened. Congratulations to Sharp as a Bowling Ball, who could very well become the first team in PFFL history to lose in the first round then win the championship, all in the same season. This is, of course, the biggest impact that the league has ever felt from the stat change rule, but if it wasn’t a passing TD, it shouldn’t count as one, right? Dave Frieder, please pipe down. Anyway, the stat-changed results will have some impact on record type stuff and everything so, just ignore everything in that last post and pay attention to this one.

Week 16 Results

(5) Sharp as a Bowling Ball beat (8) Winning Beer Money for the third time this season and the sixth straight time in the last three years. SaaBB, who is lucky to even be here, will now play in their second ever PFFL Championship game.
(3) SIAP snuck by (7) Double D in the closest playoff game in PFFL history. SIAP avenged a week 9 loss to DD, but still trails the overall series, 7-5. SIAP is in the championship game for a record fifth time, and is back after losing in the finale last season.

Playoff Records

SaaBB’s 135.25 points are the 7th most in a playoff game
The 50.56 point victory margin for SaaBB is actually only the 10th biggest blowout in postseason history
SIAP’s 0.44 point win is the closest playoff win ever, and is the 8th closest game overall
SIAP extended their league-leading postseason win total to 14
SaaBB is now tied with Tappa Kegga Day with 11 playoff wins (second most in the league)
SIAP became the first team in PFFL history to score 2000 postseason points

Toilet Bowl

Camel Toe continued their “postseason” success by advancing the Toilet Bowl title game. They will battle Tappa Kegga Day, who knocked off The Jedi Masters and are making their first Toilet Bowl championship appearance as well.

I’m pulling this together while also packing for holiday travel. If things seem briefer than normal, that’s why. If it seems like every writeup, well, ummm, then I guess I was just more efficient this week. Yep, that’s it. This was an interesting week as all of the games went the same way as the 2009 regular season meetings went. The top 2 seeds fell, meaning the 2009 PFFL champion will be a 7- or 8- regular season win team. Neat.

Week 15 Results

(8) Winning Beer Money ended (1) Post Mortem’s season the same way it began, by beating them soundly. WBM now holds a 7-3 all-time lead over Post Mortem. For Post Mortem, despite scoring the third highest points of the 8 playoff teams this week, it’s a second straight successful regular season followed by a first round playoff exit.
(7) Double D beat (2) CSPJ by almost 30, similar to the 39 point beating they put on the smokers back in week 5. DD leads this series 5-2.
(3) SIAP was the only division winner to score a victory this week, beating the previously red-hot (6) DDT by 16. It’s SIAP’s second win over DDT this season, but DDT still holds a 7-5 series lead. SIAP has a 2-0 playoff record against DDT.
(4) Kramerica Industries snuck by (5) Sharp as a Bowling Ball by less than a point. This was Kramerica’s third win over SaaBB this season, tying their all-time series at 6 wins each. KI is 2-1 against SaaBB in the postseason.

Playoff Records

Kramerica’s 0.74 point win is the second closest playoff game in league history. Only SaaBB’s 0.68 point win over SIAP in 2007 was more tightly contested.
Post Mortem’s 99.32 points scored this week is the 9th highest point total in a playoff round losing effort.
Post Mortem and Sharp as a Bowling Ball are the first PFFL teams to achieve the 10 postseason loss milestone. It’s going to be at least two years before anyone else is hitting this mark.
SIAP extended their league-leading postseason win record to 13.

Playoff Semi-Final Matchups

(3) SIAP vs (7) Double D – This is the first ever playoff meeting between these two teams, but it is the 12th meeting overall. Double D leads the series, 7-4 and beat SIAP in week 9, 102.92 – 73.99.
(4) Kramerica Industries vs (8) Winning Beer Money – This is also the first ever playoff meeting between these two clubs, and the 13th meeting overall. Kramerica leads the all-time matchup, 8-4, and beat WBM in week 9, 89.94 – 84.75.

Toilet Bowl

Tappa Kegga Day knocked out The Jedi Masters while Camel Toe earned their first-ever post-week-14 game, beating The Hip.
TKD now faces Turd Ferguson while Camel Toe takes on Hedfullalicker

2009 Playoff Week 1 Preview [Miranda Kerr]

First off, some reminders on waiver rules:

A quick reminder about the playoffs – there is home field advantage in play in the first two rounds. So the better seed gets a 2-point head start.

Playoff Quarterfinal Matchups

The first round playoff matchups all feature rematches of games from the 2009 regular season. One of the games is also a rematch of a first round playoff matchup from 2008.

(8) Winning Beer Money vs (1) Post Mortem: Winning Beer Money opened the season with a 107.15 – 84.77 win over Post Mortem. Mortem then proceeded to win 11 straight. WBM leads the overall series with PM, 6-3, but they are also only 1-5 in first round playoff games. The good news? When WBM won that lone first round game, they went on to win the championship. Post Mortem is 4-5 in the first round of the playoffs. They were also the #1 seed last year and were promptly eliminated in these very quarterfinals.
(7) Double D vs (2) Chain Smoking Patch Junkies: Double D blew out CSPJ back in week 5, 84.95 – 45.45 and owns a 4-2 head-to-head lead over the Smokers. CSPJ has never won a playoff game (0-3 all-time) and has not been in the playoffs since 2005. However, they are in this year with the league’s second best record and their franchise’s first division crown. Double D is returning to the postseason after a one year break. They have not won a first round playoff game since 2005, when they won the championship. Their overall first round record is 2-2. If they win in round 1, they have always advanced to the title game.
(6) Duany Duany Tanning vs (3) SIAP: DDT enters the postseason as one of the league’s hottest teams, while SIAP has lost 3 of their last 4 games. DDT leads the all-time matchup with SIAP, 7-4, but lost in week 4, 83.4 – 72.16. These two met in the postseason in 2004, with SIAP beating DDT, 127.2 – 105 in the semi-finals. DDT is 3-3 in first round playoff action. Most recently, they lost in round 1 as the #6 seed last season. SIAP is in the playoffs for the 9th time, and third straight season. This is their second appearance as a #3 seed. It is also their third West Division title. Wanna know what happened the other two times they won the West? They won the championship. In the first round, SIAP is 6-2.
(5) Sharp as a Bowling Ball vs (4) Kramerica Industries: This is the only playoff game matching up two division opponents. Kramerica swept SaaBB in their two meetings this season, and has won 5 of the last six against the bowling balls. However, SaaBB’s one win during that stretch came exactly one year ago, in the first round of the 2008 playoffs when they beat KI, 92.83 – 84.13. This is the third straight season that will feature a playoff meeting between these two. Kramerica beat SaaBB in the semi-finals in 2007, 90.12 – 52.21. SaaBB is making their 10th appearance in the PFFL postseason and has only lost in the first round once, wayyyyyy back in 1998 (it should be noted that their record in round 2 is much worse, 1-7). Kramerica is making their fourth trip to the playoffs (and third straight), with a 1-2 mark in round 1 to show for their efforts (on a positive note, KI is 1-0 in round 2).

Toilet Bowl Matchups

Hedfullalicker and Turd Ferguson get byes into the semi-final round of the Toilet Bowl, but the bottom 4 teams in the league square off this week. The last two Toilet Bowl champs, as well as the last two League champs are all in action this week.

(6) The Hip vs (3) Camel Toe: The Hip won the Toilet Bowl in 2007 and carries an all-time 6-2 record in Toilet appearances, including two previous wins over Camel Toe. For Toe, this is their fourth time in the Toilet round in their fourth season in the league. If they keep this up, we’re renaming this thing the Camel Toe Bowl. Of course, I’m not doing that until they actually win a Toilet Bowl game — they’re 0-3.
(5) Tappa Kegga Day vs (4) The Jedi Masters: This game features the last two PFFL champions, both of whom have missed the playoffs since their league championship season. The Jedi Masters return to the Toilet Bowl for only the second time, but they’ve been successful here, winning the toilet title last year. TKD is 1-1 in Toilet Bowl action, with their only previous appearance coming in 2004.

2009 Week 14 Recap & Regular Season Records [Rihanna]

Results

CSPJ won their third straight game to improve to 9-5, the second best mark in the league. The victory earned the ‘smokers a season sweep of Tappa Kegga Day and an impressive 7-1 division record. Despite the two wins this year for CSPJ, TKD still leads the career matchup, 7-3.
Camel Toe closed out the season on a winning note, beating The Hip by 7. The win gives Toe an impressive 6-2 division record, including the sweep of The Hip. Unfortunately, that 0-6 non-division mark kept Camel out of the postseason.
Sharp as a Bowling Ball won their third straight game to improve to 8-6 on the year and complete a season sweep of Winning Beer Money. SaaBB now leads that series 8-5-1 all-time.
I jokingly mentioned that negative points from Kurt Warner would change the playoff lineup. Well, at half time of the Monday night game, that was holding true. Warner put together enough of a positive stat line in the second half for Kramerica to hold onto the 3.41 point win over Turd Ferguson though. The win earns KI a season split with Turd, but more importantly an 8-6 record and a playoff spot. This series is all tied up at 5 wins each.
The Jedi Masters improved to 6-8 with a win over struggling SIAP. SIAP managed only 52.5 points in the losing effort, but still backed into a division title. The Jedis now lead this series, 9-5.
Post Mortem rode the legs of Frank Gore, the arm of Matt Schaub and the injury replacement starting role of Quinten Gainther to their 12th win of the season. The victory completes a sweep of Hedfullalicker on the season and improves Post Mortem’s all-time lead over Hed to 14-6. For ‘licker, their fourth consecutive loss to end the season dropped them out of the playoffs.
Duany Duany Tanning continued their late season surge, improving from 3-7 to win four straight games and qualify for the postseason. Both teams finished the year with identical 7-7 marks, including 3-3 in division play, and a season split head-to-head. But, while DDT has a 4-game win streak, Double D has now lost 3 in a row. DDT leads this all-time matchup, 5-2.

Central Division Champ: Post Mortem – #1 seed with a league-best 12-2 record
East Division Champ: Chain Smoking Patch Junkies – #2 seed with a second-best 9-5 mark

Individual Team High(or low)lights

Camel Toe did something they haven’t done before. They improved their record over the previous season. Unfortunately, despite scoring the most points in franchise history, they still came up one victory short of the postseason.
CSPJ’s 9-5 mark is equal to their franchise best mark set in 2004. This time, however, that record comes with their first ever division championship. Their 1318 points is also a franchise record.
Double D continues to have up-then-down-then-up again seasons. Win totals in franchise history, starting in 2003: 9-6-10-8-11-4-7. Interesting? Maybe. Meaningless? Absolutely.
DDT is the six seed in the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Their .500 season continued their run of success — only one year (2003) under .500 in franchise history. Their 1326 points is the second highest total in franchise history, behind only the 1424 posted in their inaugural season of 2001.
Hedfullalicker finishes the decade with a crazy stat: even years in the 2000′s? Playoffs. Odd years? No Playoffs. Yep, that’s right, Hedfullalicker is 5/10 in playoff qualifying since 2000, all in even numbered years.
Kramerica Industries is in the postseason for a third consecutive season. Their 1273 points scored this season is a franchise best.
Post Mortem is 23-5 in regular season action over the last two seasons. That’s unprecedented in PFFL history. Mortem’s Central division title is their first division win outside of the West. This is the fifth straight playoff berth for Post, and the 1454 points scored this season is second most in franchise history.
SaaBB is in the playoffs for the third straight season, and first ever as the #5 seed. SaaBB’s 1266 points is fourth most in franchise history.
SIAP won their third West Division title (to go with one Central division crown in their trophy rack) and is in the playoffs for the third straight season. However, their 1189 points is their lowest season output since 2003.
Tappa Kegga Day struggled to the second worst season record in franchise history, behind their 3-11 finish in 2002. The 1200 points scored is actually the fourth most ever scored by a TKD team. However, the 1519 points allowed is by far the most given up.
The Hip, who won back-to-back league championships in 2002 and 2003 are now 18-38 over the last four seasons. Ouch.
The Jedi Masters finished 6-8 for the second straight season after a run of dominance in the middle of the decade. Their 1232 points scored, while not at all awful, were their lowest output since 2005.
Turd Ferguson followed up their 2008 playoff season with a pretty mediocre run of it in 2009. The highlight of their year is probably recording their first high point week since 2006.
Winning Beer Money is back in the playoffs after a one year layoff. They are now 19-23 since their championship season in 2006. The 1269 points scored by WBM this year is fourth in team history, while the 1234 points against is 3rd highest in franchise history.

Two Week Finals: The Jedi Masters: 199.96 – Post Mortem: 189.91

The Jedi Masters, despite not making the playoffs, won their second ever Survivor title (oh, and $100). They are now 2-1 in Survivor finals. Post Mortem, on the other hand, has the season high points win, so taking only $40 in Survivor probably isn’t too terrible. Mortem is now 1-2 in Survivor finals.

Postseason Waivers Reminder

With the postseason upon us, I wanted to remind everyone about the postseason waiver rules:

Only teams in the championship playoff round are allowed to make waiver requests (for those of you in the Toilet Bowl, I will be disabling your add/drop ability on Tuesday)
Players may only be claimed to take the place of a NEWLY injured player. And, the player added must be of the same position as that injured player. So, for example, Post Mortem can add a RB this week to because Kevin Smith was injured in week 14.
The player dropped to make room for the added player does NOT need to be the injured player. So, Post Mortem could drop say, a defense if they want.

Note that the above applies to BOTH the blind bid and first come/first serve waiver periods.

If you have any questions about injury/waiver eligibility, do not hesitate to ask.

Pre-Monday Night Playoff Race Update
