If the playoffs were to start today (2009, wk 12)

Happy Thanksgiving to all PFFL-ers. Here’s wishing you all a fantastic holiday filled. For those of you traveling like me, do so safely. For those of you spending time with family and friends, enjoy the time. For those of you spending it alone, enjoy the peace and quiet while you watch three football games.

You can check out the “Playoffs” tab on the myFantasyLeague site at any time to see how the seeds in PFFL would work out if the season ended today. Also, the old PFFL site has a page for the Division Race and Wild Card Race but tiebreakers are only mildly applied there (i.e., they are wrong).

Clinched

Post Mortem has not only clinched a playoff berth, but based on their win in week 11, they have also clinched the Central Division Title and the #1 overall seed.

Postseason Records

This is playoff appearance #10 for Post Mortem. SaaBB could join Mortem at that league-leading figure if they can find a way into the dance
This is the second straight #1 seed for Post Mortem, an accomplishment that no other PFFL team has achieved (the consecutive part — there have been other teams with multiple top seeds). ‘Mortem hopes it works out better than last year’s first round flame out.
The division title is Post Mortem’s fourth, tied with Tappa Kegga Day behind league-leading The Jedi Masters’ 5.

But, I thought I’d add a little detail here.

If the playoffs started today, these would be your first round matchups:

(8) Winning Beer Money vs (1) Post Mortem
(7) Sharp as a Bowling Ball vs (2) SIAP
(6) Kramerica Industries vs (3) CSPJ
(5) Hedfullalicker vs (4) Double D

There were no changes at all in the seeding from 1-8

Tiebreaker info:

Hed gets the advantage over Kramerica due to a head-to-head win
Winning Beer Money beat Turd Ferguson head-to-head
SaaBB is 3-0 on the season against Turd and WBM, so they are the leader of the 3 5-6 teams in the West
Camel Toe split their season series with The Jedi Masters, but has a better division record and is therefore top 5-6 team in the East
SaaBB beat Camel Toe head-to-head
WBM is 1-0 against Turd in the West, so they rank higher
Winning Beer Money gets in ahead of Camel Toe based on total points scored
Turd Ferguson beat Camel Toe, and therefore is the first team out of the playoffs

If you’re looking for some historical perspective on playoff chances after 11 games, here’s what I can tell you:

Teams with 8+ wins after 11 weeks have never missed the playoffs. Post Mortem is the only team this year that qualifies in this category and has most certainly clinched a spot.
Only once (in 25 times) has a team with a 7-4 record missed the playoffs. Camel Toe accomplished that feat in 2006. This is good news for SIAP and Double D.
Only 5 of 32 6-5 teams have failed to qualify for the postseason. WBM (twice), Post Mortem, The Dark Side and CGRW are the only teams to fail to make it in. This is good news for CSPJ, Hedfullalicker and Kramerica.
Of the 33 teams with 5 wins after 11 weeks, 16 have made it to the playoffs, 17 have not. This is the fence that SaaBB, WBM, Turd, Camel, and the Jedis are sitting on right now.
There is some good news for the remaining three teams. Three 4-win teams and one 3-win team have made it to the playoffs. Unfortunately for DDT, The Hip and TKD, that is most definitely the exception, not the norm.

Playoff Scenarios – Week 12

These are the possible playoff spot/seed clinching scenarios that I’ve determined for this week. They may be incomplete, and they may be wrong.

Post Mortem has already clinched the #1 seed.
Double D and SIAP will both clinch playoff spots with wins and losses by The Jedi Masters (to Post Mortem), Turd Ferguson (to Hedfullalicker) and SaaBB (to SIAP)
I can’t completely guarantee this one, but I believe The Hip and Tappa Kegga Day will be eliminated from contention if they lose this week

If the Playoffs Were to Start Today (2009, wk 9)

But, I thought I’d add a little detail here.

If the playoffs started today, these would be your first round matchups:

(8) Camel Toe vs (1) Post Mortem
(7) Kramerica Industries vs (2) SIAP
(6) Hedfullalicker vs (3) CSPJ
(5) Turd Ferguson vs (4) Double D

Seeds 5-8 are all 4-4 right now. Turd beat Kramerica, so is the West division representative in the first three-way tiebreak, along with Hed and Camel. Camel lost to both Turd and Hed. Turd and Hed have not played, so it goes to total points and Turd gets seed 5. For the 6 seed, Hed gets it cleanly with a sweep of both Camel Toe and Kramerica. Finally, the 7-8 seeding comes down to total points scored.

That would breakdown as 2 teams from the East, 3 from the Central and 3 from the West

If you’re looking for some historical perspective on playoff chances after 8 games, here’s what I can tell you:

Teams with 6+ wins after 8 weeks have never ever missed the playoffs — a perfect 24-for-24. This is great news for Post Mortem and SIAP.
6 teams with 5-3 records have failed to make the postseason, out of 41 teams to hit that record after 8 weeks.
Predictably, it gets a little tighter after that, as 16 .500 teams after 8 weeks have missed the playoffs, out of 42 with that record.
Only 9 teams with 3 wins in their first 8 games have ever made the playoffs. 20 of 29 teams at 3-5 missed out on the postseason fun.
The Hip has successfully bucked the odds twice, qualifying for the playoffs in 1999 after a 2-6 start, and again in 2004 after beginning the season 1-7. No one else has ever gotten into the dance without winning at least 3 of their first 8.

2008 Playoff Week 2 Preview [Marisa Miller 2009 Calendar]

Quick reminder: There is home field advantage again this week, so both Turd Ferguson and SaaBB will be getting a 2-point boost to start things off. There is no home-field in the championship.

Playoff Semifinal Matchups

One game this week is a rematch of a game played just three weeks ago, while the other is the first meeting of the year. Week 15 saw 2 of 4 lower seeds advance. Will we see any upsets this week? To decide the matchup for the 2008 PFFL Championship game:

(8) SIAP vs (5) Turd Ferguson – This is the first meeting of the year for these two clubs who made the playoffs as wild cards and scored upset victories in round 1. Despite not playing in ’08, these two are familar foes, as this will be their 16th meeting in PFFL history. SIAP leads that series, 9-6, and swept Turd last year when they were division rivals. This is their first ever meeting in the postseason. SIAP is 3-2 in semi-final games, while Turd Ferguson is 1-2 and has not advanced to a championship game since 1999.
(3) Tappa Kegga Day vs (2) SaaBB – Back in week 13, SaaBB beat TKD by 20 to lock up the #2 seed in the playoffs and the 2-point head start that could come in handy this week. While this is the 16th all-time meeting of these two clubs, it is only their second faceoff in the postseason. In PFFL’s innagural season of 1997, TKD beat SaaBB, 89-74 in the semi-finals. TKD is an impressive 3-1 in the semifinal playoff round, while SaaBB struggles in this round, going 1-6 in their opportunities to make it to the big game.

Toilet Bowl Matchups

(3) Winning Beer Money vs (2) The Hip – The Hip is an impressive 5-1 in Toilet Bowl action, while WBM picked up their first consolation round 1 (in 2 tries) last week.
(5) Double D vs (1) The Jedi Masters – Double D is now 1-0 in the toilet bowl, while this is the first ever toilet game for TJM.

2008 Week 11 Stat Change [Marisa Miller]

A small stat change this week as a 4 yard pass from Jake Delhomme to Steve Smith was added to the official record book.

The Jedi Masters, who started Steve Smith, get 0.4 more points.

This change does not resurrect TJM’s Survivor status, but it does pull them a little closer in one race:

2008 Week 7 Recap [Marisa Miller]

Inspired by the good fortune of my 7-0 start in PFFL, I decided to test my luck. So, after cooking a little steak dinner and drinking some wine, I pulled an engagement ring out of my pocket and asked Kelley (for the few of you who have never met her, she’s my girlfriend of a year and a half+ who is way more than I deserve) to marry me. Not sure if it was the wine or if she really knew what she was doing, but she accepted. So, yeah, 7-0 in PFFL and engaged… You guys are going to let me win my first championship, right?

Week 7 Highlights

Don’t look now, but The Hip is on a roll, winning their 3rd straight game this week to improve to 4-3. They also snapped a 3-game losing streak against DDT and took a 7-6 all-time series lead.
SIAP got back on the winning track with a win over CSPJ, evening their career matchup at 3 wins apiece and taking a second consecutive game from the Smokers.
Kramerica has won 2 straight and Double D has dropped 2 in a row. Kramerica’s big win was only their 2nd in 8 tries against DD. It was also their first week 7 win against the Doublers.
Turd Ferguson improved to 4-3 with a 63-point win over Tappa Kegga Day. The win snaps a 4-game streak for TKD over Turd and ties the all-time matchup at 8 wins each.
Post Mortem gained its first ever win against Camel Toe, despite scoring under 80 points. PM is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the competitive West division, while CT drops to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in division play.
Winning Beer Money notched its first win since week 1, defeating Hedfullalicker by 12 in a high scoring affair. WBM now leads the career series, 7-6 and has won 2 in a row over Hed.
SaaBB extended their division lead to 3 games with a win over 2nd place TJM. SaaBB has now won 6 straight, and has a 3-0 division record. TJM drops to 3-4 and 1-2 in division action. The overall series now stands at 9-6 in favor of SaaBB.

Record Watch

Post Mortem’s 7-0 start is the 2nd best start to a season in PFFL history, trailing only SaaBB’s 8-0 start 4 seasons ago.
In addition, PM’s 7-game run is tied for the 8th longest winning streak in league history.

For the second straight week, Kramerica is your Immunity winner. In other Survivor news, despite being undefeated, this week saw Post Mortem get voted off the island.

Postseason Races

East – 3 teams are tied for the division lead with 4-3 records, and even last place Double D is only 2 games out of first. DDT has the inside track right now with an undefeated division record, but this division looks like it will be a fight to the wire.

Central – With a win over TJM this week, SaaBB extended their division lead to 3 games. It’s going to take a serious stumble by the Bowlers before anyone else is going to seriously challenge for the Central crown.

West – Post Mortem sits atop the division with a 7-0 mark. Meanwhile, three teams are tied for 2nd in the division with 4-3 records. This one is Mortem’s to lose.

Wild Card – It’s pretty simple right now. If your team has an above-.500 record, you are in the playoffs. For these teams, it’s simple. Keep winning and you’re in the postseason.
