Rosebuds and Packers
December 23rd, 2003 | Filed under General.Last night, a bunch of us planned to go to the Rosebud Cinema Drafthouse to watch the Packer game against the lowly Raiders.
Now, the Rosebud is a totally cool theatre:
- One screen
- Couches everywhere
- Beer
- Alcohol
- and food too
I really like the theatre due to its neighborhood feel and the fact that it typically only plays very high quality films.
BUT — last night there was a problem. Upon arrival at the Rosebud, Dave and Dale discovered that the Packer game was not being shown. Instead Lord of the Rings – Return of the King was playing (great movie, btw). Since there were 12-15 people expected to show up for the game, this became a cell phone frenzy as we tried to re-route people elsewhere to watch the game. Due to the frustration, I decided to send an email to Jay who runs the Rosebud today. Here it is:
Jay,
I just wanted to pass along some disappointment from a group of about 12 of us who were really hoping to watch the Packer game at the Rosebud last night. While I fully understand the financial benefits of playing Return of the King last night – this is the kind of thing I’d expect more from the big money-grubbing multiplexes, NOT from the fan-friendly Rosebud. The fact that an email went out last week advertising the Packer Monday night game with NO follow-up email to announce a change in plans is even more difficult to understand.
Finally – I’ve got one other bone to pick. I won a $15 gift certificate through the trivia contest last week. I was hoping to use that for some refreshments last evening. Now, due to an expiration date of 12/24, I think I have a worthless certificate…
Hoping this was just a one-time hiccup in what has always been quality Rosebud customer relations,
Paul
Now, granted, I probably went a little overboard in expressing my disappointment, but here’s the response I received:
Paul,
I’m sorry to hear about your disappointment regarding last night’s game. You weren’t the only ones upset about the game not being on at the Rosebud; we had to tell over one hundred people the same thing I’m telling you now, that it was an oversight on our part, that we forgot to send an explanatory email, that we apologize profusely, and that it certainly won’t happen again.
I hope you can take some comfort in the fact that you and your 11 friends weren’t the only ones upset about last night’s mix-up. You were, however, the only one who felt the need to insult both me, my establishment, and my dedication to my customers, by insinuating that the Rosebud was no different than a “money-grubbing multiplex.”
To the other disappointed patrons from last night, I gladly offered tickets to an upcoming show as well as certificates for refreshments.
To you, I’m only offering my apologies.
Sincerely,
Jay Hollis
Apparently, I struck a nerve…

Paul, that’s just plain awesome! I love it!
Ok…while it was cool that you wrote them to tell them your disappointment, they smacked you right back! I’d say that your certificate is most definitely worthless at this point…and if I were you I wouldn’t ever drop your name too loudly while there in the future…they might kick you out!
