Studies done by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that Daylight Saving Time trims the entire country’s electricity usage by a significant, but small amount, of about one percent each day with Daylight Saving Time. We save energy because we use less electricity for lighting and appliances. Similarly, In New Zealand, power companies have found that power usage decreases 3.5% when daylight saving starts. In the first week, peak evening consumption commonly drops around 5%.

I do like the fact that days will seem longer again — but I’m not really a big fan of losing that whole hour tonight. In any case, don’t forget to Spring Forward one hour tonight — unless of course you live in an area of the US that doesn’t observe DST like Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, most of the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of Indiana, and the state of Arizona (not the Navajo Indian Reservation, which does observe)
