Some reshuffling of the countdown this week, but only one debut song – by one of my favorite band discoveries of the past year – The New Pornographers. They’ve got a new album coming out in early August, and entering the countdown at #9 is the title track and first release, “Twin Cinema.”
Here’s the problem with songs by Fountain of Wayne – I usually really like them the first time I hear them — enough to make Maureen a quick riser to #1 — but their allure fades fairly quickly. Therefore, Maureen drops 3 spots this week and Hwy 5 is back at #1.
Gaining momentum is Shadowland by Youth Group – this anthem-style song is real catchy and it wouldn’t surprise me to see it keep rising in the next couple weeks.
Stay tuned later this week for a spotlight on some indie music discovered via podcast.
I finally updated the Music Countdown and found that taking a week off certainly meant more turn over than normal. The top 5 songs are all hanging around yet, with the biggest riser being “Maureen” by Fountains of Wayne, which jumped from 5 to 1.
Maybe I’ll talk more about the countdown later, but for now, wanted to post the “hey, it’s updated” message and let you listen to the new #1:
It is now officially only 100 days until the first game of the 2005 NFL season. Among other things, I think it’s officially OK to discuss fantasy football regularly. It’s also time for me to start trying to find a draft date for PFFL — you’d think it would be too early, but in the past couple of years, the chances of finding a single Friday or Saturday in late August when every team was available has become increasingly difficult.
I’ve also updated the music countdown (I updated it last week too, but didn’t write anything about it). We’ve got a new #1: Hwy 5 by John Doe & Neko Case. You can listen to it by clicking the play button below:
The countdown this week also features a few new songs:
Maureen by Fountains of Wayne – from their upcoming two-disc album, continuing a string of songs from them that include a girl’s name, just as catchy as “Stacy’s Mom”
Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) by Arcade Fire – Arcade Fire is one of the better bands to debut this year. This melodic tune is a good one. I’m looking forward to seeing them at Lollapalooza later this summer.
Get Well Soon by Reggie & the Full Effect – this song joins Green Day in representing the punk rock genre on the countdown
In other news, the Memorial Day weekend is coming to a close. I had a great time at the 4th annual Erin/Lisa Memorial Day bash yesterday, and you can view my photos here.
Also, there are new photos from a Brewer Outing last Monday and sometime this week, I’ll upload a ton of pics from our Kiwanis clubs Winners Wear Helmets day last Thursday.
A fast-riser has jumped to #1 on the countdown this week, as Very Loud by the Shout Out Louds jumps 5 spots to take the lead. I just like how catchy the song is, plus it’s off an album called “Howl Howl Gaff Gaff” – which is funny even if I don’t really know what it means.
Shout Out Louds are :
four boys and one girl from Stockholm in Sweden and we play music together in a band. We used to call our band Luca Brasi but because of another band who also called themselves Luca Brasi, that name now sleeps with the fish. These days we call our band Shout Out Louds. That has nothing to do with Kiss although we do not mind Kiss under any circumstances. Now we are going to tell you about our band.
We started our band in 2001. Actually, Adam (the singer) and Ted (the bass man) started it and after only a few seconds Carl (the guitar player) joined them. They had all been friends since they were rather small and they loved the same records so there was really no point in not starting a band. Then Eric (the drummer) and finally Bebban (the keyboards etc. player) came along. They were two more friends from a rather early stage in life. Eric played the drums like some kind of a creature while Bebban was getting awfully tired of walking around the city on her own waiting for people to come out of their garages, so there was really no point in not asking them to join the band.
If you browse their site, you’ll notice that they played Coachella (a music festival I think I need to go to soon), but have never played in Wisconsin — Why not bring them in for a music festival this summer, Milwaukee? Maybe something like Summerfest?

New to the countdown this week:
Starts Off With a Bang by Mobius Band – Very Emo, very smooth sound. I like.
Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living) by Eels – Pop sound, cynical lyrics from what sounds like a very very emotional type record
As usual, search around iTunes, Amazon or wherever, take a preview listen to these tracks and if you like ‘em, buy the tracks or the whole albums.
This week’s countdown is both lazy and impulsive in nature. Lazy because I decided on the top 10 in about 10 minutes. Impulsive because I turned over half of the songs on the list!

The five songs falling out of the countdown:
Ashes – this song has been in the countdown for weeks, it was just time for it to move on
Girl by Beck – just didn’t do it enough for me to stick around
Mike Doughty – same deal, just got bored with it quickly
Coldplay – the song is decent, but I think this is one of those cases where I was we all got OD’d on Coldplay over the last couple of years
White Russian Galaxy – another song that’s been on the countdown for a while
New this week:
Apply Some Pressure by Maximo Park – this song wavered between annoying and good the first time I heard it, now it’s completely growing on me
Why Do You Love Me by Garbage – I’ve always liked Garbage, and this new tune of theres is really catchy
Hwy 5 by John Doe & Neko Case – I’ve only recently discovered the amazingness that is Neko Case’s voice, any song she releases is gonna make this countdown
Lyla by Oasis – the band is of the old school variety, the song is new and great
Very Loud by Shout Out Louds – I’m really really loving this song right now, it’s catchy, fun, and all that
